I, the wind, come and go as I choose… and none can stop me

“…the music of the sun and the stars, the music of yourself, vibrating. Yes, you are the music too…everyone is supposed to be playing their part in this vast Arkestra of the cosmos”. This is Sun Ra, pianist, composer and poet, in the 1972 film Space is the Place. Space is the Place is a science fiction film where Sun Ra is going to free black people from oppression bringing them, with a music powered spaceship, to a new planet.

On a scene of a concert in this film, Sun Ra sings/recites: “I the wind come and go as I choose, and none can stop me” The song he and His Intergalactic Solar Arkestra play in this scene is called I Am the Brother of the Wind:

This powerful phrase, “I the Wind come and go as I choose, and none can stop me”, made me think about all the people that leave their home and their country escaping war, famine, or just looking for a better place to live; courageously embarking on a make-it-or-break-it journey to pursue their dreams. And this inspired me to compose these two songs, included in our album La Noche Arrolladora, dedicated to their untamed spirit.

In music there is no place for walls, borders, discrimination, selfishness. Music is a matter of sharing ideas and emotions, you open your heart to others and open your arms to each other’s hearts. There is place for everyone, and every different one contributes to make a better music. Earth is the Place.
